A closer look
Bell tent · Upper hillside
Sea campion is the white flower that grows in the grass along the cliffs near Bude, coming out of the wind in cushions where nothing much else will. Sea Campion the tent is the middle of the three on the upper hillside, just above St Enodoc as the path climbs, with St Petroc higher still. Its own private deck with a chiminea, matting underfoot, and a double bed and two singles all made up with bedding and towels before you arrive.
The path up is steep, on grass and uneven in places, and you do it with your bags in your hands on the first afternoon. We would rather you knew that from this page than from the hill. It is not the right choice for anyone with limited mobility, and it is not the right choice if you are arriving with a car’s worth of luggage.
What you get for it is height and quiet. You are well up above the valley floor here, and it runs away below the deck with nothing in the way of it. People who book Sea Campion tend to book it again. The shower block and toilets are in the glamping car park, open 24 hours and less than five minutes’ walk away, and the communal glamping cook deck is about the same again, with the washing-up and a fridge and freezer. Take a torch for after dark. The bell tents run from April to September.
Where it sits: The middle of the three upper-hillside tents — just above St Enodoc as the path climbs, with St Petroc higher still, and the valley below.
See Sea Campion on the park mapShowers and toilets are in the shared block in the glamping car park, open 24 hours and less than five minutes’ walk away. There’s no cooking inside the tent, but the deck outside has a gas cooker of its own, and the communal glamping cook deck has the washing-up and a fridge and freezer.
Steep — up the hillside path on grass, uneven in places, past St Enodoc. Sea Campion is the middle of the three upper tents, so it’s a longer pull than St Enodoc and a shorter one than St Petroc above it. Plenty of guests take it on gladly for the view. If anyone in the party has limited mobility, or you’re bringing a lot of luggage, please choose one of the lower tents instead.
Long. You’re well up the hillside here, with the valley opening out below the deck and nothing much in the way of it. St Petroc, on the highest deck above you, looks the furthest down the valley of the three.
Sea campion — the white flower that grows in low cushions along the cliffs near Bude, in wind that sees off most other things. It seemed right for a tent sitting this high and this exposed.
In the shared block in the glamping car park, open 24 hours, with hot showers, hairdryers and baby changing in both the male and female toilets. From Sea Campion it’s less than five minutes’ walk, though a torch is worth having after dark.
Yes, outside. There’s no cooking inside the canvas, but the deck has its own gas cooker right outside the tent. The communal glamping cook deck is about five minutes’ walk for the washing-up and the fridge and freezer. Fistral and Polzeath down in the camping field have a gas cooker on each deck too; Hartland and Kernow, on the lower hillside, share a gas point opposite their decks.
No. The beds are made up with bedding and towels, and there’s a chiminea on the deck. Bring food — and pack it into as few bags as you can manage, given the walk.
Yes. Dogs are welcome in every stay at Willow Valley. Keep them on a lead no longer than two metres around the park, use the dog exercise area, and please don’t leave them unattended. Give the climb a thought if your dog is elderly.
