Polzeath stands beside Fistral in the camping field, on the same flat ground and to the same specification: matting underfoot, a double bed and two singles made up with bedding and towels, and a timber deck of its own with a gas cooker and a chiminea on it. It takes its name from the wide north-coast beach — which, as it happens, is a short walk from St Enodoc church, the tent up on our top hillside.
The appeal here is how little effort the place asks of you. Nothing on the park requires a climb from this deck. The facilities are a level walk away, the dog wash is behind reception, and the eleven acres of river and woodland start at the edge of the field. Guests who are travelling with an older dog, or who would simply rather not haul a cool box uphill, usually end up here or at Fistral.
It’s a fair first go at canvas: more comfortable than a tent you’ve pitched yourself, but still properly under it, with the sides of the valley rising on either hand. The bell tents run from April to September.
Where it sits: Alongside Fistral in the camping field on the valley floor — level ground, an easy walk from the car and an easy walk to everything else.
See Polzeath on the park mapShowers and toilets are in the shared block, open 24 hours and reached on the flat. There’s no cooking inside the canvas, but the deck has a gas cooker of its own — and there’s a covered cook deck at the facilities if you want more room.
In the camping field on the valley floor, next to Fistral. Both are on the flat and both are close to the facilities.
It’s one of the easiest. There’s no hill between the car and the deck, the dog wash is behind reception, and eleven acres of river and woodland start at the edge of the field. Dogs stay on a lead no longer than two metres around the park.
Right outside on your own deck — Polzeath has a gas cooker of its own. There’s no cooking inside the canvas. The cook deck at the facilities is there if you want more space.
No. The beds are made up with bedding, towels are provided, and there’s a chiminea out on the deck. Bring food and that’s the lot.
A double bed and two single beds in one round canvas room, with matting underfoot. It suits a family of four, or two couples who don’t mind sharing the space.
No — the opposite. Polzeath is in the camping fields, which is the busiest and most sociable part of the park in high season. The lower and upper hillside tents are the quieter option, at the cost of a walk uphill.
April to September. Outside those months the lodges, Bluebird the school bus and Boskenna the Airstream stay open, and the camping pitches run in their own seasons.
